Presentation :
I am a native German living in Japan for 26 years and working here as a freelance translator for about 20 years. Basically I came to Japan to study Japanese archery, but then undertook a formal education in oriental medicine and am now a licenced acupuncturist. After obtaining my licences I spent 4 years for postgraduate studies working in a large hospital with a research department for oriental medicine. Later I spent several years as full-time freelancer and 10 years ago opened my own acupuncture clinic in Japan. One of the very few indeed run by a western foreigner.
Interests :
Martial arts like Kyudo, Tai Chi etc., bicycling, music and literature. I take interest in a wide variety of other subjects too, but my simultaneous work as both translator and acupuncturist usually prevents me from spending much time on leisure.
Professional experience :
Twenty years freelance translation in Japan. Working in Japan means, I am at the source of Japanese materials. That enables me sometimes to obtain clear manuscripts of texts, clients outside Japan may provide me only as poorly readable PDF files or faxes. It also means, that I may have access to information not readily available outside the country.
Unfortunately working in Japan also implies very high costs of living, necessitating rather high rates. The rates Japanese companies pay me here are listed below.
While specializing in medicine and technology, the over 100 Japanese agencies I am registered with are sending me all kinds of materials including numerous manuals, confidential materials of major Japanese companies and sometimes even books. Yet, I do NOT translate materials related to economics, politics and law.
Prices :
Rates (paid by Japanese translation agencies)
Japanese -> German about 3500 Yen per 160 of finished translation -> or ca. 22 Yen per word
Japanese -> English about 3200 Yen per 180 of finished translation -> or ca 18 Yen per word
English German about 3000-3500 Yen per 160 of finished translation -> or ca. 19-22 Yen per word

Working method :
You can reach me both at home and in my clinic via e-mail, fax or phone.
